It first started with a friend, Jonathon Carey, buying a controller and mucking around on in a garage. The club scene at the time was fervent and you could walk into a packed club (Spice Cellar, Club 77 and the Burdekin) on a weeknight. From there DJing became less about the clubbing scene and more about the community of friends that I hope close.
I’m obsessed with the internet and finding old, obscure music that makes me feel different emotions. YouTube channels like Adventures In Sound, Terminal Passage, Musicdawn 45’s, Okonkole Y Trompa and ballacid all provide ongoing musical inspiration, as do the countless Facebook groups I lurk.
Being less exposed to music at clubs, festivals and parties definitely has pushed me towards more sensitive, emotional music. That’s not to say a dirty club track doesn’t play a part in lockdown musico-therapy!
Self care for me is about quality time with my close friends and family. Whether that be trip to Campsie RSL, a succulent home-cooked meal by many of my talented home cooks or cracking a few cold ones in a park – they all do wonders for my mental health.
Sydney has one of the most creative and tight-knit communities of electronic musicians, I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by so many friends who make me feel proud. I think digital production will make music more accessible to those who can’t afford expensive equipment and broaden the digital sound palette to Sydney-siders.
