Never Ending Roundabout

November 18, 2020

Berlin based, Canberra DJ AWHM, takes us for a deep and emotive journey through music that is very personal to him. It's hypnotic and thoughtful & features some great underwater sounds. This mix is a reflection of his time living in Berlin during the pandemic.

"I have now found myself mostly playing and listening to music that I really enjoy on a personal level, not so much stuff that would make a crowd go crazy and I feel this is directly reflected in the music you can hear in this mix"

Interview

You’ve relocated from your hometown of Canberra to Berlin, how has this influenced your DJing and music tastes?

Back in Canberra I was presented with so many opportunities to play music and I was always looking for the newest tracks to add to my library that would create a “wow moment”.

Having been in Berlin for some time now and not having so many opportunities to play out I feel like my music library has matured so to speak. I have now found myself mostly playing and listening to music that I really enjoy on a personal level, not so much stuff that would make a crowd go crazy and I feel this is directly reflected in the music you can hear in this mix.

As well as this i have been building quite the collection of old & new trance and techno that has been amazing to listen to whilst on the go and a lot of fun for me to play whilst I teach exercise classes.

What has your Covid experience been like in Berlin, a city so centred around party culture?

The first lockdown we had back in March was horrible. For me personally I lost a lot of motivation for djing, producing (attempting to at-least) and discovering new music. A lot of my inspiration came from going to parties and being in awe of the incredible artists we get to see every weekend in Berlin. This was obviously no longer an option and sadly I came out as a version of myself that I do not recognise today.

Fast forward to after the lockdown in June/July there were only seated outdoor events and small private parties which are still a lot of fun but not the same, so I used this time wisely. I got fit as hell, I signed a full time contract with work and I started to rediscover my passion for music intrinsically. This is when I cleansed my palette with music that made me feel good, and I’m loving every second of it.

From discovering new labels by digging through the discographies of artists to finding more and more tracks that fall within the spectrum of my freshly renovated taste buds, each day I am more excited than ever to play and listen to the music I'm finding.

What do you do for self care?

As mentioned above I recently signed a full time contract with the company I work for which has me teaching 20 high intensity exercise classes per week. This has my daily step count through the roof and I need to ensure I’m staying fit enough outside of work to make this career one that is not impossible to maintain. To do this I have been pushing my body to the limit these past few months.

In addition to teaching 20 classes per week, I usually do 1-2 hours of resistance training in the gym 6 days per week. For my cardio fitness I try to run 2-3 times per week and recently these have been anywhere from a 5-10km fast run to a gruelling 21km half marathon around Berlin once a month or so.

It sounds like a lot and it is.. but I love the process and I feel like I’m constantly fully charged and ready to take on the world every day :D

What creative projects do you have in the works?

I seem to be constantly chipping away at Ableton getting better and better every time I try to create something new so I hope by the end of this current lockdown I can have some finished works to put out into the world.

What’s your dream gig or festival you’re itching to go to when big music events are finally allowed again?

No doubt you’ll find me in Berghain ripping into 36 hours of pure and honest fun the second they open back up.
