Interview

How did you first get into DJing?

My love for dance music started growing a few years ago. After seeing a handful of powerful females represented at gigs in 2018, I decided to treat myself to a controller for my birthday! It’s been a side hobby that I’ve mostly enjoyed for fun in my bedroom until recently.

Who’s been a key figure or mentor in your growth as a DJ?

I definitely have to give a big shout out to my close friend WINNY, who invited me to play b2b at her gig about a year ago. Without that opportunity I don’t think my mixing would have left the bedroom just yet. The music industry can feel like a daunting place for any female, so I feel inspired when I see other women and non-binary DJ’s being represented.

Has lockdown changed the type of music you’ve been listening to/ collecting?

I think lockdown has really helped me refine the direction of what I want to play. I’ve spent the last (almost) year discovering a bunch of artists and it’s been so fun collecting new music. I love exploring a new sound and going down a rabbit hole – many late nights have been had!

You work behind the scenes at some of Sydney’s favourite electronic music events, previously working with Lost Paradise and Finely Tuned. What’s your favourite part of working in the music industry?

Yes, what a dream it was! The Lost Paradise/Finely Tuned family are so talented at their craft. They throw some of the best events in Sydney and I learnt so much about event and music marketing during my time there. A highlight of working in the industry has to be selling out an event and witnessing it come to life. Getting to watch incredibly talented artists and then see the happiness their music brings to the dancers is a rewarding experience.

What do you think makes a good event?

I think a combination of a good sound, good lighting, a feeling of intimacy, a respectful and friendly crowd and most importantly a passionate team behind the scenes. You can’t have a great event without a great team, it’s the backbone of any unforgettable gig.

What’s your dream event you’re looking forward to once restrictions are lifted?

Honestly, anything will do at this point! I just want to dance. But a dream would be at any bush or beach location with sunsets, disco balls, a great sound system, even better tunes and being able to hug all of my friends! Just simple needs to be met…

What do you do for self care?

There are a few things that spark my serotonin. Listening to music is an obvious one, but I find calm in taking baths, cooking, exercising and exploring out in nature. Going for a long walk in any of Sydney’s National Parks with good company always soothes the soul.

What are your predictions for Sydney’s electronic music scene going forward & what changes would you like to see post-lockdown restrictions?

With a delay in international headliners coming over, there’s going to be huge opportunities for locals to claim back that space. In saying that, I think the scene is going to feel very vibrant and connected.! I’m so excited for Sydney’s scene to bloom again.
