High NRG drummy goodness with juke and jersey roots

"[dancefloors] are a way of connecting in whatever way feels comfy to you - like you can be eye contacting the DJ all night, or just throwing it back lost in the beat"

Interview

Tell us a bit about your mix?

It’s v drummy! A bunch of inspo from people like Isa from Athletica and Atro, as well as from producers like DJ Plead, DJ Haram, UNiiQU3, Swisha, AHADADREAM, Ase Manual, BASSBEAR - basically all my juke and jersey roots.

What inspired you to start DJing?

People from Warrang (Sydney) know I’m a dance floor fiend, and really I just fell in love with our scene and our amazing DJ’s. I went to so many parties I eventually was like, ‘you know, that looks fun, I could do that!’, and applied to FBi Dance Class.

You started 2020 as part of Danceclass, a DJ program for female identifying, trans + non binary artists. What tools did this give you to kick-start your DJ career?

Honestly, I think it just mainly gave me confidence. I’ve always been musical, come from a really musical family, and am a dancer, but I’d never really found ‘my thing’ in terms of music. I think it gave me the ability to put myself on a stage - to really just have fun with performing and not be too scared about how people might judge.

Your DJ career begun exactly the same time as Covid did, your very first gig the weekend before lockdown. What was this experience like and how did you stay motivated to continue learning and practicing during the midst of lockdown?

For me, dance floors have always been a really social thing. They’re a way of connecting in whatever way feels comfy to you - like you can be eye contacting the DJ all night, or just throwing it back lost in the beat, or enjoying yourself in a crowd or group of friends, or out in the smokers talking shit all night. What kept me going was losing all that at once - I felt that there was still that need to be seen and see other people, and I wanted to try and put my own spin on finding that iso connection. I was also just practising a bunch and putting mixes up, it was a way of being like ‘hey, I’m still here, ready to party when we all can again, but I see you’.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

Definitely the above, DJ Plead, AHADADREAM, Swisha, BASSBEAR, Ase, Arma. I like finding that connection between jersey and techno too, I feel like LSDXOXO is really in that groove. Also have to give huge props to Octo, Eris, Ariel Zetina, Bored Lord and all the trans crew - y’all are amazing and give me hope.

You’re a lawyer by day, DJ by night. What does your weekly schedule look like?

My weeks, to be totally honest, are insane. But apparently I like to be busy. I work a Mon-Fri job in a community legal centre, play netball 3 nights a week, then go hard on the weekends. For me, self care is finding that balance between being in your head and in your body.

What are your hopes and predictions for Sydney’s electronic music scene going forward & what changes would you like to see post-lockdown restrictions?

I’d love to see more collaboration between the BIPOC and trans crews in Warrang. We have so much up and coming talent, it’s actually off the hook. In particular I’d love to see more stuff being run by crews like ANTE and Third Space.

Some shoutouts...

Check out 'AUS CLUB MUSIC' people like Sandro and Johnny and Ry are such gems in our scene and deserve recognition - they post a ton of Bandcamp music and really hype me up to buy stuff.
