Pocari Sweat

September 7, 2021

A homage to the OG Construct crew, a fire mix of UK bass & UK techno that will make you sweat!

"It's a mix I feel that reflects the old Construct parties and it's a reminder of this fun and exciting adventure I've been on since I moved to the Inner West - the connections I've made, the experiences and opportunities I've had and the parties I've raved at"

Interview

Can you tell us a bit about the mix we’re about to hear?

This mix is a homage to the OG Construct crew. Gilsun, Brennan, Kizza and my partner Pip formed Construct back in 2014 and threw regular parties at the Gladstone. Construct was a club night that primarily focused on UK bass, dubstep and UK techno.

The first Construct party I went to I saw Addison Groove and Peverelist play at Goodgod club in the CBD and from that moment on I grew a love for UK bass and deep dubstep. Construct took a short hiatus, and then after Pip and I met we relaunched it in 2015 as a radio show, mix series, and we've teamed up with local crews DUNJ and VOID to host parties including Special Request and Zed Bias.

This mix I've put together has a lot of old favourites and is a nod to the UK bass heavyweights such as Pangaea, Tessela, Bambounou, Randomer, and Akkord.

It's a mix I feel that reflects the old Construct parties and it's a reminder of this fun and exciting adventure I've been on since I moved to the Inner West - the connections I've made, the experiences and opportunities I've had and the parties I've raved at.

How did you first get into DJ’ing?

My partner taught me! I took a liking to music production when I was about 12 years old and absolutely loved listening to drum & bass. I would always visualise my DJ sets, even though I had no idea how to mix. I met Pip about 7 years ago, we started producing music together under different aliases and then the logical step was to get him to teach me how to DJ. He's a legend. We have so much fun together and he's a great teacher!

What’s been keeping you busy or helping you pass the time during this lockdown?

A shit-tonne of walking. I live near the Cooks River (Marrickville) and I try to walk as much as I can with my pooch. I've also been playing Ghost of Tsushima and Cyberpunk, cooking a lot of Indonesian food, and I nap a lot. I'm the Queen of napping.

What’s your favourite record at the moment and why?

To be honest, I've been listening to so much electronic music that it's hard to pick a favourite...so I'm going to go with an oldie - The Battle of Los Angeles album by Rage Against the Machine. Gotta release some of that lockdown rage...ya know?

What’s your favourite party you’ve ever played?

Subsonic Music Festival just before Djrum. It was a night time set at the River Stage and it was wild...and then I went on a fantastic bender. Playing the closing set with Pip after Pariah in a warehouse was also pretty nuts.

Something people might not know about you?

I have a black belt in Taekwondo. I took a very long time off training though but started back up at the beginning of the year. I train with some awesome people (big ups Chungdo TKD) and I'm looking forward to seeing their faces again when lockdown ends.

What are you thankful for this year?

A wonderful Facebook group chat called "Supercrew." All my favourite warehouse-wasters from various Sydney crews, such as DUNJ, Extra Spicy, Translate, Big Ting, Asylum, Construct and Swerve, in the one clusterfuck of a chat. There's daily banter, meme-swapping, throwback photos and a whole bunch of shit-talking. We constantly check in with each other, support each other and it's really helped to keep us all connected especially during this second lockdown. I love them all. They're the best.

Any other projects, music or otherwise you’d like to shout out?

Pip and I have a dark and menacing techno track coming out later this year on an Eora label and there are a few artists confirmed for remixing duties. We wrote it shortly after seeing DJ Nobu and Peter Van Hoesen at a warehouse party last year, about a week before the first lockdown happened. I had a couple of fun gigs lined up but unfortunately they were and will be cancelled...but hey, all in good time, aye!
