As Clouds Rush

Inspired by the era of late 90s house, manifesting drinking cocktails at summer pool parties

I found that the lack of physical connection experienced during lockdowns has really pushed people to connect in other ways. I think the sense of community on platforms such as SoundCloud and Instagram has really strengthened through Covid

Interview

Firstly, can you tell us a little about the mix we're about to hear?

This mix is quite inspired by the era of late 90s house. I tried to keep the vibe pretty light-hearted and fun... I think I was dreaming about drinking cocktails at summer pool parties when I recorded it lol so hopefully that translates in the mix! Hopefully those summer pool parties can become a reality again sometime soon! :'(

How did you first get into DJing?

I've always had friends around me who played music so I would often mess around with friends' equipment and became a bit obsessed with learning to mix vinyl - not really ever with an intention of playing for any kind of audience (!!). Then in 2018 I was booked to play my first gig which was a park party in Brisbane/Meanjin, run by a crew called Shade (Jimmy and Kristian who are two good mates <3 ). Being given that opportunity really kickstarted a process of believing in myself I guess :)

You're the label head of The Space Between Us, what was your initial concept for the label and how has it grown and evolved since it's conception?

The Space Between Us was actually first created as a platform for music publicity which is wild to think now.. mostly because looking back I didn't enjoy publicity work all that much lol. Over the years it has evolved as I've found myself being drawn to different parts of the process of releasing music and working with artists. My focus now is definitely on The Space Between Us as a label as I'm really enjoying working with friends to put their music out there.

As a Meeanjin / Brisbane girl, relocated to Naarm, how has the transition between the two cities been, both within the music scene and shifting the home of your label.

I moved to Naarm/Melbourne in July 2020, which coincided with the beginning of the stage four lockdown. It was certainly a bit of an odd time to move, not being able to go out and meet people physically... but, there have been so many blessings that came with it too. I found that the lack of physical connection experienced during lockdowns has really pushed people to connect in other ways. I think the sense of community on platforms such as SoundCloud and Instagram has really strengthened through Covid. SoundCloud especially (although it is fairly average as a platform I think), the people that use it really make it what it is. I'm really thankful that my transition has been super smooth and I've felt very welcome thanks to the many amazing people I've met online :) In terms of the label I think it's been super nice to have new connections while also keeping in touch with everyone back 'home'... Each of the cities in Aus has so much going on in their own ways, although I find can sometimes operate quite independently from each other. I really hope to try and contribute to increased connection between the two cities through TSBU.

With spring comes a change in mood, things starting to look up after a long Covid lockdown winter. What are you looking forward to most as longer, warmer days set in?

I'm hoping for more outdoor parties (always but especially now!), and just overall the idea of life getting a bit closer to normal again.

Most memorable dance floor moment of this year?

Quite a few! A couple of highlights were seeing some artists I'd never seen play before... Moopie (was amazing to finally see him in action). I also saw CC Disco and JNETT which was such a huge vibe!! Also just meeting so many internet friends irl has been so great <3

Something people might not know about you?

There's a bunch of awkward videos of me on YouTube reading the news as part of my university journalism degree. They are have unfortunately been uploaded through an old YouTube account which I can no longer access lol

Any other projects, releases you're working on?

The most recent release on TSBU came out last month, it's by a Meanjin/Brisbane artist called Axon Growth Factor: https://thespacebetweenus.bandcamp.com/album/cytokinesis
