False Start

February 17, 2022

Warm, forward thinking music, channeling the new year energy

"The whole Melbourne-prog thing has gone gangbusters over the last year or so which is super sick to see. That’s been a source of inpso for sure"

Interview

Can you tell us a bit about the mix we are about to hear?

I put this mix together in the first few days of 2022 when I was at home isolating with COVID. The whole period was a nice way to reset and realign following the chaos around the Christmas/New Year period. Simultaneously, it made the start of the year feel like a weird false-start. I packed the mix with a bunch of warm, forward-thinking dance music I was listening to around that time. Mixed in some new-year affirmations into the start to help channel that energy I was feeling a little more.

You're a co-founder of Velodrome, Eora music collective. How has your involvement in this project helped you grow and evolve as an artist?

I think my work with Velodrome definitely exposed me to a lot heavier, more club-orientated music. I think playing our parties and putting out music has helped me a stronger appreciation of what kind of sounds works well in a club/party setting – be that the mixing of the song, or hook-like elements in a dance track. I think between us four velodrome members, our collective taste in music is quite broad, and I think their tastes have definitely rubbed off on me over the years.

Where do you draw inspiration from when producing music?

I think the music that inspires me tends to be local. The whole Melbourne-prog thing has gone gangbusters over the last year or so which is super sick to see. That’s been a source of inpso for sure. I like artists that can do that more progressive, trancey sound while still retaining a human warmth in their music. Fantastic Man is great example of this, and is a producer I admire a lot.

I try not to rely on ‘needing’ inspiration when I set out to write music. I find creating dance music is a fairly process-orientated practice. As long as I show up and noodle with my machines, something decent will usually come out on the other end.

You produce for Simon Caldwell on Monday Sunset on FBi Radio. What do you get up to in the studio and what’s your favourite part about making radio?

I’ve just finished up that role this week actually haha. It’s been a lot of fun. I have a segment on there dedicated to playing new local releases which has really helped keep my ear to the ground with new stuff coming out of Aus. Being able to give emerging-artists airtime is a great feeling.

What are you most excited for this year?

Got a few international acts that we’ll touring/working with throughout 2022. In general we’re hoping to take things a little bigger with Velodrome. We also have a few releases right around the corner that we’re super excited about.

Any projects, things you’re working on you want to shout out to?

I just had a couple tracks drop on some compilations over the last month or so. A track called ‘Four-O’ on Bristol label Commatrax. It’s a label run by Hannd, that’s putting out a bunch of really clubby dance stuff. Their back-catalogue is definitely worth a dig through!

And a track ‘Belly Breath’ on the latest General Merchant comp. The guys that run General Merchant are super lovely and have really fantastic taste. Really respect what they’re doing.
