giulia's guest mix from the livestream is beautiful, haunting and meditative with deep sounds that reverberate from within.

"I will set up a little makeshift altar that consists of crystals and other objects that represent a particular intention or hold specific energy that I am trying to embody and communicate sonically"

Interview

giulia is a multitasking DJ, artist, curator and dance floor fixture in Sydney's music scene. She's known for her symphonic and spacious techno that echoes long after the lights are turned on. FBi Dance Class alumni of 2019, Giulia has been making waves in the local scene, delivering impactful sets at Sydney's favourites Community Chest and Soft Centre and running event series "tactɪc" alongside D-Grade.

You come from an artist background, how does this influence your approach to DJing?

I would say I am inherently a curator, and this sort of approach infiltrates most things in my life. Whether that is forming an artwork, organising an event, putting a set together... even the way I arrange my bedroom. I think it comes down to intention. I'm often thinking about space and how things look or fit or sound together, even if the intention is purely aesthetic (although it often runs deeper than that).

I didn't get a chance to ask about your little shrine of tokens and crystals that were beautifully arranged on the turntable next to you while you played. Can you talk about the symbolism behind these?

Whenever I play a set or am curating/running an event, I will set up a little makeshift altar that consists of crystals and other objects that represent a particular intention or hold specific energy that I am trying to embody and communicate sonically. The "selection process" for what I use each time is always quite intuitive. There's a ritualistic element to it and it's very much an energy thing... it's difficult to put into words because it's really something that is felt, and attempting to speak about the feelings and experiences tied into these actions often falls short of what it really is.

It's interesting because although some people would maybe be aware that this is something that I do, it's not something I have been openly asked about before. I'm also wary of the fact that some people might understand what I mean by all of this, and some people won't, and I'm cool with that too. This whole process and my thoughts around it are strange to articulate whilst trying to be concise so if anyone wants to talk more in depth about this, feel free to hit me up.

Have you picked up any new hobbies/ skills in lockdown?

I feel self-conscious about saying that I haven't really picked up any new skills or hobbies during the pandemic or more specifically lockdown... I was just trying my best to cope with such a drastic change in lifestyle and I found that really challenging, so coping for me was certainly enough. This is a gentle reminder that this year has been tough and intense in so many different ways and it's okay to feel unproductive!

In saying that, it's been a big time of realisations regarding self and how I exist in and relate to the world around me... this is something I definitely already spent a lot of time thinking about but I guess I got even better at it? It's not "new" but something that can always use refining, so there's that. Oh, and doing yoga videos in my tiny loungeroom. Yoga was always something that I said I wanted to do and never did, so it's nice that I can now integrate it into my weekly routine.

How would you like to see the local electronic music scene grow and adapt post lockdown?

I haven't given much thought to this because I've honestly been trying not to think about parties and raving due to how deeply I miss it. In saying that, there is always more room to diversify line-ups and give opportunities to people that don't get booked that often, or are less well-known in the local scene. I'm constantly pretty blown away by just how much talent we have here in Sydney. I think a lot of people are aware that there won't be any international touring for the foreseeable future, so in a way it will be a great opportunity to shift the dynamic of having locals support these artists, to instead focusing on local talent with a less hierarchical approach to billing. More opportunities for more people is an excellent and very exciting thing I am looking forward to!
