Interview

How did you first get into DJing?

My older brother has a big role to play in this, as soon as I turned 18 he took me out to Spice, Sly Fox and Sash and I instantly fell in love, I loved everything about it the people, the dancing, atmosphere it was always pretty dam electric and special. I was drawn to everyone’s focus on the dj and the music he or she was playing, I could not stop dancing.

My brother has a big vinyl collection and we would often have a mix together, I always found myself taking out Meditations 1-3 part 2, Vinyl speed adjust exposed EP and my all-time favourite record Crocus 001. Soon after we purchased some CDJs 850’s and the music journey began for me. I started experimenting with house and disco and I was lucky enough to get my first ever gig with Comfy Grrrl, there was no going back. Comfy Grrrl provided me with a platform where I could really experiment with different styles of music until I found my groove playing minimal.

Who is your biggest musical inspiration?

My first ever Subsonic I saw Katie Drover play the 5am set on Saturday morning and I was mesmerised, I would attend all the parties she was playing at in Sydney and her sets were heaving. I love her style and the way she controls the dance floor. I would say she is my biggest inspiration because I find her sound so sophisticated and I really rate her very own label ‘dokutokurecords.’

Favourite record at the moment and why?

Would have to say Mihai Pol Miroloja - MTMLTD008 – MTM, both tracks are just so bold and wonderful. I love Mihai’s sound so much he produces such rolling, light, fluffy and bouncy tracks and A1 is very much that. I also really love Miroloja’s sound their tracks have such a smooth, dark rolling tone to them.

You’ve got a really busy schedule working as a nurse, what do you do for self care in your downtime?

It can be challenging at times to strike the whole work life balance thing, nursing can be so physically and mentally demanding and yet extremely rewarding. I think it’s paramount to listen to your body and mind so when I’m feeling burnt out or on my days off I like to refuel by doing bushwalks, cooking, massages +++, spending time with loved ones and finding new music, I find all these activities super therapeutic.
