Dawnlight Deference

January 17, 2022

This mix has all the feels, it’s sunrise at the doof, gloopy yet uplifting, spacious and reflective, hugs on the dance floor. Made for the afterparty and perfectly capturing that glowing dawn energy.

“These delicate predawn moments call for patient, balanced and empathetic selections, allowing dancers to retract into introspection.”

Interview

Can you tell us a bit about the mix we are about to hear?

Approaching this mix, I was still recovering from an exhausting 2021. The thought of being at a high-energy party was daunting, yet I still longed to be in the presence of new music, to dance, and to connect with friends and strangers. So I opted to channel the subtle energy of a moody house afterparty - a context where some of my fondest memories have been formed. These delicate predawn moments call for patient, balanced and empathetic selections, allowing dancers to retract into introspection.

The mix features a range of styles; IDM, New Age, Ambient Breaks and Percussive House, weaved together by the common thread of space.

Your latest EP, Curvework Vol.1: As Time Passes draws on influences of your south asian heritage through fast paced, rhythmic percussion. Do you have a particular time or place these tracks transport you to when you were producing them or listening back to?

These tracks more so represent a journey through time, rather than a particular moment. A longform realisation that I am the product of many cultures intersecting, and that my creative output is a representation of such. This is why I feel so at home with dance music, as for me it embodies the urban interpretation of traditional, global artforms.

You’re the founder of Meanjin based label Pocketmoth, releasing a really interesting and diverse array of electronic music. What do you look for when selecting music to release on the label?

It’s hard to say exactly, but we love intricate rhythms, delicate melodic elements and textural soundscapes. So many different styles of music can hold these qualities, which is perhaps why our catalogue features a broad range of styles!

You debuted your live show at the end of 2021, how has your experience been transitioning into live performance and how has your show evolved over the couple of performances you’ve had so far?

Moving into live performance has been an incredible process. The journey to get here has been extremely challenging, yet possibly the most rewarding musical endeavour I’ve ever embarked on. Live electronic music has taught me to be disciplined in my creative practice, and constantly pushes me to improve/develop/change. It’s also incredibly satisfying to perform in this way, as my roots are in live music.

Since my first live show, I’ve grown a lot as an artist, producer and performer. This all translates into the confidence with which I play and the different types of music I share. I’m also grateful for the way in which live performance has reshaped my relationship with the decks. I was getting pretty saturated due to how much I was DJing , but live performance provided a much needed perspective shift.

Favourite dance-floor moment of 2021?

Yonder festival: Watching King Stingray drop into their track ‘Milkumana’. I have honestly never seen a crowd of any size move like that before, let alone a headline festival crowd. Unbelievable energy.

It feels like there’s some amazing creativity bubbling in the Meanjin underground right now, do you have any predictions for the future of your local scene?

The pandemic shifted our focus from international artists towards developing and promoting homegrown talent. It’s obviously been a difficult couple of years, but pivoting opportunities towards local artists has allowed the scene to grow massively. Things will keep moving this year too - I feel there'll be plenty of DJs popping onto the scene and lots of new original music coming out from debut producers!

What are you most excited for this year?

  1. The plethora of music that is due for physical release on Pocketmoth
  2. Working and collaborating with artists across the country, including a network of South Asian friends I’ve connected with over the last few months. Stay tuned for that
  3. Touring interstate and making new music.

Any other projects you’re working on and want to shout out?

  • My band, Twin Haus, is releasing an album this year. So excited to share that!
  • I’m diving into the world of podcasting/radio… wish me luck!
