What Have You Got

April 1, 2021

Sweden's Emitzy takes us on an exploration of wax collected during lockdown. Expect Bouncy, 90's infused house and stripped back, late night, techy thumpers.

"Winters are normally boring and everyone stays inside keeping cozy and warm, but when you have friends who love the same thing you do and get together once a week to play tunes, it's not so long and dark anymore"

Interview

Tell us a bit about your mix?

At the beginning of this pandemic I bought a pair of turntables and have started collecting vinyl since. I have done a lot of exploring with different styles of music and my preference of has changed a lot during this time and I really wanted to show some great artists that I fell in love with and didn't know about before.

How did you first start DJing?

I was very lucky to be surrounded by great djs and producers from my time in Australia and when I finally returned home to northern Sweden I didn't know anyone who was a dj anymore. I thought I could give it go and bought myself a controller to practise.

It was pretty hard in the start with no one around me that was into that music culture. I kept messaging friends from Australia to ask for help with my mixing. Big thanks to my man Tom Witheridge who helped me out and who also is an inspiration to me. I finally moved down south closer to the capitol and found some incredible friends to share this with.

Who’s your biggest musical inspiration and why?

Im very grateful to have amazing friends around me that play outstanding music and they are definitely the biggest inspiration to me right now

What’s this past year been like for you living in Sweden, and the impact of Covid on your local music scene?

This past year has been different in many ways but also has allowed a lot of new possibilities. Covid has created opportunity for new local DJs to play gigs and thrive at local parties instead of only booking big names. Our music community all helps organise parties together and gives everyone involved a chance to play their music.

The scene was really booming before covid with heaps of different crews organising parties both underground and in clubs but now there is obviously a lot less of that happening but you make the best of it.

You lived in Australia for many years before moving back to Sweden. How have both of these places influenced your music taste / sound?

Living in Australia is how I was introduced to electronic music and I still look up to a lot of my friends who play over there and am influenced by them at the same time. I have a lot of new inspirations here in Sweden as well so its definitely great combining the two.

Your winters are particularly long and dark, what do you do for self care?

I would normally say winters are boring and everyone pretty much just stays inside keeping it cozy and warm. But when you have friends around you that love the same thing you do and we get together at least once a week playing tunes its not so long and dark anymore. For selfcare we would go skiing in the mountains a couple hours away from home and my favourite thing of all would be the sauna after. If you haven't tried aufguss before you're missing out and look it up immediately.

Favourite B-Side & why?

Haokah - Memory trigger (B2) - Takes me right back to a special place with wonderful people.

What are your predictions for your local music scene going forward?

I think going forward we will see a lot of new ideas and different crews trying to do their own thing. Everyone is desperate to party so even for me and my friend we are looking to do something as well.
