110% Glen

June 16, 2022

You can't get more Glen S than this mix, all originals, mostly written in the last 8 months in Redfern on Gadigal land 110% euphoria

"I think I’ve been blessed with excessive amounts of natural dopamine in my body because I seem to feel a lot of euphoria in my life. It was probably passed down from my dad who would often have to pull over whilst driving because he would get these massive endorphin rushes listening to his favourite music"

Interview

Can you tell us a bit about the mix we are about to hear?

This mix is the culmination of 25 years of music listening, playing and writing. Music has always been at the centre of my life - I played the clarinet and oboe from the age of 5 and was on my way to becoming a semi-professional oboist until I fell out of love with classical music in my early 20s. Since I first started DJing outside of high school I have been in and out of love of seemingly all genres of electronic music, but have always had a soft spot for well produced, synthy and proggressive tracks that I find so bodily satisfying to listen to! This probably goes back to the first times I started playing with the Sydney Youth Orchestra - going from your average sounding high school band to a fully fledged semi professional orchestra playing in amazing music halls really makes you realise how much more physically satisfying any genre can sound when it is well produced.

I had been doing some beginner producing at home for a few years and remember listening to a Guy Contact track last year (Whip Crack Cowboy released on Haws) and telling my friend listening with me that I wanted to write this kind of music. Since then, I have found my sound, learned loads more producing skills and have written music every day I could. Nearly all of the tracks in this mix have been written in the last 8 months since I moved to my current home in Redfern.

Walk us through the daily life of Glen S, you’re one of the busiest people I know, running your own business TLD Woodworking, djing, pumping out new music & running Prion on the weekends? How do you balance everything and what keeps you motivated?

Recently my mum has been calling me at 645am in the morning to wake me up and get me out of bed and tells me I hope I have a great day which is a great start. Been doing some morning workouts  with my housemate Maria and then I’ll work from 9-6 at my warehouse managing all aspects of running a solo furniture making business, come home, eat some dinner (often at my studio desk) and write music till 10 or 11 almost every weeknight (apart from the nights when I’m seeing friends/family). It’s honestly the best I love life etc etc

I’ve worked really hard over the past 5 years or so to always try and be doing what I love every moment of every day which makes it way easier to find a good balance in my life. Running my own business and making what I want is honestly a joy 99% of the time (it can be a slog every now and again), and writing music is pretty much the same (and DJing and running Prion Audio too!).

Your productions all have a very recognisable sound, quite well described by the name of your nomad show ‘Planet Euphoria’. Where do you draw inspiration from when making music? & describe your perfect moment of Euphoria?

I think I’ve been blessed with excessive amounts of natural dopamine in my body because I seem to feel a lot of euphoria in my life. It was probably passed down from my dad who would often have to pull over whilst driving because he would get these massive endorphin rushes listening to his favourite music (U2 - beautiful day was his favourite song smdh).

I get the exact same feeling when listening to my favourite tracks which usually has rough modulating saw waves with massive delays and risers that take your mind to new atmospheres. Throw in a chunky, groovy bass line, a hypnotic 303 and an extreme amount of resonance, panning, and a fat kick drum and you’ve got a Glen S wet dream.

There’s a million producers who I absolutely adore like the current crew of space cadets Adam Pits, Lisene, Solar Suite, Maruwa etc but also some old school Goa heroes like Eat Static, Higher Intelligence Agency and Speedy J.

What’s your favourite event you’ve been to this year?

My favourite event this year has probably got to be the very first one - Woop Woop put on by some of the DS crew no less! Spending 3 days with my 4 bffs dancing in front of the Prion stacks, lying by the swamp in the middle of the day underneath gum trees, being big goofs and making new friends was honestly the best way to bring in 2022.

I hear you’re leaving us for an extended trip quite soon! Tell us about your next adventure?

Heading over to Europe (classic) in August after my brothers wedding in Darwin. Hoping to go away for an extended period of time and see as much of the world I can without having to think about the admin of running a business.  I’m dreaming of buying an old 4wd in Serbia and driving it all the way back home to Sydney via as many off-the-beaten-path countries as I can muster/afford.

Any new releases or projects you’re working on we should keep an eye out for?

Many releases and projects!

This year I’ve got 4 EPs coming out (so far!) and a few scheduled in for next year. First up is a 7 tracker I’m really proud of with local label Eclectic with an extraordinary remix by In2stellar which comes out in July.

From there it’ll be one every month or so until the end of the year with the occasional compilation squeezed in between.

euphoria-inducing I’m also hoping to turn Planet Euphoria into a label at some point and start putting out some compilations and releases from euphoria inducing producers around the world!

I’ve always got spare tracks laying around so if any label peeps want any demos just message me xx
